In this episode, Margo & Tashira share what it was like to be diagnosed with breast cancer (while still young women under 40) what their doctors prepared them for (and didn't prepare them for) and how they find themselves now in recovery. A major theme that emerges is how the doctors and medical establishment at large, minimize the concerns of women going through treatment, and how Margo & Tashira have often felt blindsighted about something they've experienced during/post treatment, and they discuss ways this could be improved within our health care system.
Margo and Tashira met in July 2010 during Margo’s first day at Georgetown Law School’s Domestic Violence Clinic. Tashira was a summer law student intern, and the two quickly developed a friendship. Their over decade long friendship has transgressed cities, careers and many life changes.
They have walked together through celebrations and deep grief. In 2017, Tashira was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer after a year-long battle with fibroids. Watching Tashira walk through her breast cancer journey with bravery and authenticity paved a path for Margo to confront her own experience with breast cancer in 2021. Now in mid-life and cancer-free, Margo and Tashira are writing their own destiny.
After battling breast cancer, Tashira quit her job as an attorney working in public policy to follow her passion as a content creator. This major life change allowed her to explore the many facets of fashion and entrepreneurship, including becoming the self-proclaimed High Priestess of Thotlandia. She has shepherded a group of women and femmes under a call for bodily autonomy, pleasure and empowerment.
In 2021, Margo was diagnosed with the BRCA-2 gene mutation that put her at extremely high risk of cancer a month after turning 40. She made the decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy and ovarian surgery. Margo chose to see the diagnosis and subsequent surgeries as an opportunity for reflection on her life’s journey. The following year, she made the difficult decision to leave her role as a law professor to pursue her own path.
The justUS podcast comes at a time when Tashira and Margo are emboldened with new opportunities. It has been in the works for many years. It is just one example of how their cross-cultural and long-standing friendship transcends identities. Tashira as a queer Black womxn and rich auntie and Margo as a white cis-hetero, married mother of three daughters may seem on the surface to have little in common. However, they demonstrate how a friendship can persist and thrive outside of the box society has constructed for them.

Margo is many things- a mother, partner, daughter, friend and fluent Spanish speaker. She is also a scholar and professor (on leave to try her hand at some new adventures from her professor job at Northeastern University) and activist. Margo has spent years advocating for individuals impacted by intimate partner and sexual violence. Read moreLast week, as one of the stops along the M.M.LaFleur Roadshow, we hosted Tashira Halyard and Margo Lindauer at our D.C. showroom for a live recording of their podcast, justUs. As close friends, content creators, and former attorneys, Tashira (@politicsandfshn) and Margo (@margo.lindauer) are multi-hyphenates whom we admire for many reasons, including their no-bullshit banter and ability to tackle complex topics with equal parts intellect and humor. We wish our entire community could have attended their event, so we’re sharing highlights from their conversation.
